SABBATH SCHOOL

HISTORY

Sabbath School was implemented during the late afternoon portion of the Sabbath (Saturday late afternoon) by Prophet Crowdy. Classes were formed utilizing the precepts he taught the Church. The pastor called the Saints back to order for Sabbath School and in some cases the call to order is initiated by the sound of the trumpet. The superintendent of the local Sabbath School department would take charge of this portion of service. It is said that before Sabbath School began, the choir would have some time to rehearse songs. It is also said that a short devotional service (testimony meeting) would be extended to those who did not get a chance to testify during the morning service.  During Sabbath School, the superintendent would dismiss the Saints into their respective classes and teachers of each class would begin the lesson for the afternoon. Teachers of the classes were usually Saints who'd already passed out of that lesson (precept) in the precept book.

Sabbath School was implemented to not only encourage the Saints to read the bible, but it was also a way for the Saints to study the Bible in a specific way. Precepts that the Church were taught to learn start out with the Disciples' prayer, the blessing, books of the Bible and the months of the Holy year. Additional lessons were given to the Church in the form of questions and answers in a book Prophet Crowdy wrote and published called THE BIBLE GOSPEL TOLD, The Revelation of God Revealed. He even begins the book with a message titled "How some people read the Bible. "Readest Thou."" Throughout this book, we learn the duties of man, our relationship with God, and one another. He encouraged the Saints to keep these in their minds.

Saints, commonly referred to as scholars, learned these lessons with the scripture references in sections and appeared before a Board of Examiners to recite from memory. The Board consisted of the Sabbath School superintendent and two others appointed by the superintendent. The additional persons were usually Saints who passed out of lessons further down the precept book. Today, Sabbath School is practiced the same way by a few fractions of the Church. Some fractions have implemented other methods that may still include the original precept book.
